Toured Lunenberg and hike to Hurtle beach and Gaff point. Bighead, Vince and I ran the loop and did some barefoot running along the beach. Checked the forecast every few hours and the weather seemed to improve as the evening progressed- from periods of rain to 40% chance of showers.
Woke this morning under cloudy skies (again). Weather forecast was pretty abysmal with showers ending in the late afternoon.
At the rallying point at kinsmen field, the rain started coming down and we headed out. Met another group of people at Mahone bay and rode out to Indian point. The roads were beginning to dry and I could sense we were in for a nice ride. By the time we made our way back to Mahone bay and started back to Lunenberg, the sun was out.

Truro ride

Started the morning with breakfast at the olde cafe, then perused Hub cycle for some great deals. Left at 930 with a relatively big group of riders.
Truro ride today was interesting, as it always is when your sweeping. The best thing about sweeping is that you get to meet other riders. The worst thing is that it makes for a long day in the saddle, but that doesn't really matter much. I wouldn't have met Barbie who manages the tatamagouche hospital. What a job.
the colchester region is very pretty- wish I could have spent more time there. The ride was a bit short- only 65 km. Met the big group at Victoria park for a kids ride and more prizes. Awesome.
Most interesting thing that happened was mike-the-medical student disappeared and apparently got lost and almost ended up in new Glasgow 95 km later.
In bridgewater for the next 2 days. No rain, but the clouds were threatening to pot.
Had a usual big breakfast, and headed to them millennium centre to meet up with all the local riders. Despite the bad weather forecast, a number of people came out. Forecast was calling for rain and possibly lightning, so the ride was shortened by 35k- head of to malignant cove round cape george, and head back to antigonish.
Of course it had to start raining as we left the millennium centre.
Rode out to malignant cove, then made our way up cape george. Rain came sprinkling down, made the ride down the backside a bit tricky, but turned around and headed back up. Love the climb.
The 20k back to town was tough. Full headwind. Thank-you chris for your large frame to protect me from the wind.
Met up at st marthas hospital then headed to the highschool for prizes for the kids and speeches.
Another excellent day, redlined a couple times in the headwind.
Thanks for reading
D

Truro ride by ap_runner at Garmin Connect - Details

Truro ride by ap_runner at Garmin Connect - Details

pictou ride

Great ride today. 44km winds, whatever. I'll take wind over driving rain (as long as vince and Milburn are in front ;-) Ran the lobster run. Was somewhat distracted/disturbed by Les' heavy breathing/grunting... or was it moaning? What is it with women, sports, and grunting? think tennis.. Seeing how Les ran 2min faster than last year, maybe there's something to it.
After the run, chilled out a bit at the finish line, then headed out with the other core members who did the run to catch the group. Met up with them and headed back to Pictou for 46Km out and back. Lunch by Carvers, the out again. One of the girls got a flat. Would have been a simple fix, if we hadn't replaced the flat with a tube with a huge hole in it. Almost had another Truro moment where we got lost, but thanks to google maps, GPS, and a couple people who pointed us in the right direction, we got back on track and had a wicked fast, downhill, downwind ride back to Pictou.
Pictou has always been a great ride. The atmosphere has also been really good, and since we've been incorporated into the Lobster festival, there's definitely more people out, and tons of kids.
Walking through the community during the parade is novel and fun, but the I think the best is seeing the community and the people we're trying to reach.
Thanks for reading
D

Antigonish by ap_runner at Garmin Connect - Actually started out as a drizzle. Hit peggy's and huddled with the other tour riders in the gift shop. After 45 min of reconnecting with friends, and congratulating Blair for making it half way, headed back out into the wind and drizzle that had turned into more of a downpour. The rain only intensified as we approached Halifax.

70 or so people came out for peggy's and about 50 to 60 for the purcells cove ride. The 2008 “Unity in Community” Tour stop in Yarmouth featured a stop at a small community event in the countryside next to an old courthouse. There was a BBQ serving out hot-dogs and burgers. From the perspective of the people who were there when we rolled in- I’m sure they had no idea what we were doing, or what we were trying to promote. We returned to Yarmouth, had speeches in front of a handful of people, mostly Core. Despite the small turnout, Nick remained upbeat since there were a few community leaders present who had made commitments to the Tour. Was this the “community” we were trying to reach out to?

During the lead up to 2009 Tour however, we learned the Tour community leader for the 2008 Tour had withdrawn, and we were unsure if Yarmouth was even going to happen.

The Ross Clan: 3 generations of cyclists

Jack Harding, a member of the Yarmouth community rallied a number of his colleagues and managed to create a Heartland Tour event that brought the Yarmouth community out specifically for the Heartland Tour. A year later, Yarmouth has grown yet again. After running the Sheila Pool 10k road race, biking 95km around the Tri-county area, and participating in the Seafest Parade (including the bus, the Heartland Tour truck, well over 100 cyclists, and Eggs.ca and walkabout members, we were by far the largest contingent), we retired to the United Church where a number of community leaders and members of the local economy voiced their support for the Tour. The day ended by celebrating children: our future generations, with bikes and soccer balls.

I Think I finally got a sense of what Nick envisioned when he meant “unity in community”- motivating the entire community with a sense of purpose, a goal of improved heath, well being, longevity and productivity.

The Tour is over and we’re all exhausted. However, we’re equally buoyed by the bigger crowds and the emphasis on children. I think the true meaning of the Tour is becoming palpable as recognition of the trouble we’re in with respect to cardiovascular disease becomes ever more stark.

Big plans are afoot for next years Tour.

Stay tuned.

Thanks for reading

Day 7: Annapolis Valley

Photos

(link to espresso snob's picks)

The Annapolis Valley stop was an interesting one. I remember a previous year- I can't recall if a community leader for the ride was present in the AM, Kathy Saulnier (a New Glascow/Pictou community leader) was seen giving t-shirts out to the local riders in the parking lot. After the ride, we had a good meal, and headed for home. The local riders dispersed, and I don't think any of the core that year got the impression that a sense of purpose or unity was created from our presence- guys who came for a good ride had a great ride, people who may have come to ride with the Heartland Tour were probably wondering what the whole deal was about. Big Head Vince and I spent the day cruising through the Valley.

BH left yesterday, and my knee acted up and I had to abandon the ride after Blomidon. The Core had a great day in the sun, however. The real success of the tour occurred when we weren't even looking. Day care kids have been spending the entire past week learning about cycling, we (Nick) had a short pep talk with them in the morning, and they showed us their posters and T-shirts that they had been working on.

We returned to Prescott House following our ride to find activities in full swing and kids pedaling around. Even though I spent the latter part of the ride in the sag wagon, I definitely had a great day.

The day ended with a great dinner at the Fire Hall put on by the community leaders. Some traditional Tour shenanigans also took place with the awarding of the Golden Shorts. A pair of new awards were also handed out (possibly blowback for the threat of wearing the Golden Shorts). The Cougar award and the Udder Helmet. The Cougar award was handed to Melissa, while the Helmet was awarded to Kathy Saulnier. I have no comment of the former, but the latter was well deserved :). Tom, not surprisingly, was awarded the Golden Shorts, probably because of his Brazilian hair cut...

Here's the portion of the ride I was able to complete, in

cluding the elevation profile up Blomidon

<span class="Apple-style-span" style=" white-space: pre; I get a bit apprehensive when they show up to the rides with their hybrids and gear racks that probably put the bike weight well over 30lbs. Do they realize they’re going 120km over a route that includes 2km climbs?

While some come to the Tour rides looking for a challenging ride, others with chronic illnesses, mainly with cardiovascular disease often show up. There was a guy with sarcoid who did a ride a couple years ago, and a few with previous heart attacks and heart failure. Those are the ones we’re aware of. There are no doubt many others who we don’t know of. Our waiver doesn’t require the riders to disclose their medical problems, however, I’m sure we’d have some degree of reservation if we knew a particular rider had a heart function 50% of normal. Yet they show up, ride at their own pace and do fine.

There was a time when we health care practitioners recommended bed-rest to post-MI patients. Now we exercise them, and they’re living longer. It’s awesome to see how fit people, even with cardiovascular disease can ride the way they do, when there are people with perfectly normal heart function who can’t even climb a flight of stairs.
It’s pouring rain outside as we drive from Sydney to Antigonish. We’ve certainly lucked out on the weather- today was hot and partly cloudy. It clouded over during the afternoon ride around Sydney and started to pour during the kids ride. Good for us, but the turnout for the kids ride suffered somewhat due to the rain.

Breakfast at Alegra’s was delicious. The HammerHead ride delivered as advertised. Big Head handed out a map of the route before the ride, but I still couldn’t tell when it started- Julie- BH’s superstar triathlete wife started hammering before we’d even left North Sydney. The headwinds were brutal, I did my best to not get dropped, and I think I recorded my biggest power numbers to date. Ambrose, one of the local talents is a beast on the bike. Don’t have any pics of the ride since I was trying my hardest just not to vomit. I did catch some of the scenery, and it was beautiful.

We met up at Northside General Hospital and pedaled back down to the Wharf for lunch. True to form, Big Head went off on a short pre-ride run to loosen up the legs and missed the early start from Hub Cycle. No problem since we’d catch up. Big Head’s practicing his Ironman transition, so the fact that his bike shoes were on truck that was following the cyclists at the time wasn’t so much of an issue. But no one knew where to go.

Vince used his problem solving skills to print out a map from Hub Cycles and the four of us (BH, Marie-Claude Vince and I) jetted out of Truro. 16km and a couple wrong turns later, we were sitting on the lawn in front of a closed down school completely lost. MC used her mad iPhone GPS skills to confirm just how off track we were. With a lowly blackberry and no iPhone to turn to, he did what Ron does best- he made a friend. Turns out it was John Wigginton, a local Truro area resident who did the Tour 2 years ago who just happened to be driving by when Ron flagged him down for help. It’s pouring as we drive to Bridgewater. Expected the worst today with a rain warning, but it drizzled a bit in the AM, and another sprinkle in the afternoon. The shelter that was set up for the Cardiovascular Nurses/Risk factor assessment collapsed with the wind, but at the end of the day, it wasn’t necessary. The roads were dry for the most part, so another great day despite the dire weather warnings. Apparently it’s been pouring in Bridgewater today, but forecasted for sun tomorrow (according to Ron).

5 of us Marie-Claude, Andrew, Mike, Kathy, and I started the day with a local 10k “Run for the Lobster” run. It was incredibly hot and humid, but as the race started it drizzled a bit and cooled us down. Interesting trivia tidbit- Dr Gordon Young was a former race director for the Run for the Lobster race. He apparently insisted that it be accurate, and it was dead on 10k. Also, he says there were 1k markers when he directed the race (none were there today).

Run map

After the race, we hopped on our bikes and did the morning route backwards and caught up the with Tour at Pictou Landing. (other than the fact that I’m writing this off-line because the internet on the Dal bus isn’t working -geez!) I hope the rest of the tour pans out this way. There is a palpable difference in the feel of this tour with more emphasis on trying to encourage the youth to participate. It was only fitting that a young 5 or 6 year old who won the draw prize for the bike. Maybe he’ll be the next Contador!

The weather cooperated- a couple showers on the Peggy’s cove ride, and apparently the Purcell’s cove ride was pretty much dry. The sun eventually came out for the 10k ride around South end Halifax. The ride to Peggy's was fast, maybe too fast. Peggys was shrouded in fog, and could barely make out the lighthouse. The return ride was tail/cross wind. My Rt shoe cleat came loose, so could push as hard.

peggy's cove loop

Halifax south end loop

Next stop Pictou, where we participated in the Lobster Carnival Parade. The burden of cardiovascular disease is particularly high in Nova Scotia. Four-five years ago, the first Heartland tour was conceived as a campaign to raise the alarm and make our community leaders as well as the population of Nova Scotia aware of the impact of cardiovascular disease on the population. Money spent treating cardiovascular disease is skyrocketing as our population ages, and in our cash strapped economy, may soon become unsustainable unless a concerted effort is made to prevent the disease in the first place.

Exercise and physical activity is a starting point to leading an active and healthy lifestyle.

The bike is our medium, and we hope to use it to both lead by example, and help us travel this beautiful province to spread our message! Our ultimate goal is to unite the provincial leaders to develop a strategy focused on active living in hopes of preventing cancer and cardiovascular disease, the number 1 and 2 causes of death in our population.

The purpose of this blog is to help people get to know the core members of the Heartland Tour, and to highlight those who join us in spreading our message.
